MY WHY
Why I Became a Financial Advisor
From an early age, I was inspired by my parents and the stories they shared about helping their clients. Both of my parents worked full-time in the financial services industry, and growing up, our dinner table was where their day came home with them. Some of their stories were heartwarming; others were tragic but not uncommon, like a spouse who died prematurely with no life or disability insurance in place, leaving the survivor to pick up the pieces. When I entered the industry in 2001, I wanted to make the same kind of impact on people’s lives that my parents had on their clients.
Money decisions are rarely just about the numbers; the way we spend, save, and worry about money is usually shaped by the experiences we absorbed as children. A client who grew up in a household that saved out of fear of running out of money often approaches money very differently than a client who grew up watching their parents spend freely. When I work with couples, those different money perspectives often surface right in our meetings as they realize how differently they each approach financial decisions. Our relationship with money is just as personal and valuable as any other relationship in our lives, and I bring that understanding to every client conversation.
MY FOCUS
Financial Planning for Women in Transition
I focus my practice on women and couples, either approaching or in retirement. The connections I build with women navigating complex life transitions — retirement, widowhood, divorce, career change — have allowed me to build long, meaningful client relationships over many years. I often reflect on this quote attributed to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. … It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.”
This is especially true in my work with women in transition, for which I have obtained the Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® certification. Outside of my work at Forum, I run Shore Up Divorce, where I serve as a financial advocate for women navigating divorce.
